• Silicon Carbide Whiskers (WEAR A RESPIRATOR WHEN HANDLING THE POWDER PLEASE!!!!)
• Sterile Distilled Water

Equipment

• RESPIRATOR AND PROPER PPE
• Analytical Balance accurate to 1mg
• 60mL sterile polypropylene wide mouth screw cap bottle
• Vortexer
• sterile 50mL centrifuge tube
• OPTIONAL sterile 2mL round bottom tubes for aliqotting

Step By Step

1. READ THE SDS SHEET OF THE SILICON CARBIDE WHISKERS PROVIDED HERE:

2. PUT ON RESPIRATOR AND GLOVES AND FULL PPE. NON-NEGOTIABLE.

3. WORK IN A WELL VENTILATED SPACE, CHEMICAL FUME HOOD, OR OUTSIDE UPWIND ON A CALM DAY.

4. Place dampened paper towels around your balance and powder handling area. Have a waste container bin or tray lined with dampened paper towels large enough to act as comfortable secondary containment of the bottle, spatula, and powder container during powder handling.

5. Measure 50mL of sterile distilled water in the 50mL centrifuge tube. Pour half that volume into the sterile 60mL bottle which will contain the whiskers.

6. Tare this bottle on your balance.

7. Carefully, while inside the secondary container, remove small amounts of the whiskers from its container and place it into the bottle half full of water.
