Ingredients
- Potassium Acetate (98.142g/mol)
- Glacial Acetic Acid
Equipment
- Magnetic Stirrer
- pH Meter (freshly calibrated right before use)
- Analytical Balance
- 500mL Beaker
- 250mL Volumetric Flask
- 250mL Storage Bottle
Step By Step
- To a 500mL beaker add 200mL (150mL if you plan to use more dilute acetic acid than glacial) of distilled water and begin stirring.
- Add 73.607g of Sodium Acetate to the water. Allow the crystals to fully dissolve.
- Calibrate your pH meter and place the probe in the solution.
- Adjust the pH to 5.5 using Glacial Acetic Acid. WEAR GLOVES AND SPLASHPROOF GOGGLES. f you do not have glacial acetic acid then the highest concentration of acetic acid you can find. Restaurant grade white vinegar concentrate comes in at about 10% to 30% acetic acid.
- Carefully pour the contents into a 250mL volumetric flask and top off the flask to the 250mL neck mark with distilled water. Invert several times to mix the solution.
- Transfer solution to a 250mL bottle with a tight screw cap, label bottle, and store at room temp.
Notes
- BE CAREFUL WITH GLACIAL ACETIC ACID AND WEAR PROPER PPE
- WORK IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA
